Mini-biography
In 1944, Mahmoud al-Hossari was commissioned by the Egyptian
Radio Broadcasting Authority to recite the Quran on air.
In 1961,he recorded the Quran and recited in various Arab and
Islamic countries as well as in Africa, Asia, Europe, the US and
Russia.
He was the first to recite the Quran in the United Nations, the US
Congress and the UK's Kings Hall.
He also was the first to call for the establishment of a Quran
Reciters' Guild and the first Egyptian to be allowed to recite the
Quran in Kaaba.Al- Hossary died on November 24, 1980

Nageb Mahfouz
From 1911 - 2006

Born in 1911, Mahfouz is the grand old man of Arabic fiction,
enjoying the affection and reverence of both critics and a vast
readership. Mahfouz was the first Egyptian to receive a Nobel Prize in literature
(1988).
His first novel was published in 1939 and since that date he has
written thirty-two novels and thirteen collections of short stories. In
his old age, he has maintained his prolific output, producing a novel
every year.
